CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College received another solid outing from junior pitcher Bud Jeter (Columbia, S.C.) with his sixth complete game of the season, but the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers edged the Blue Hose in Saturday's series finale, 1-0.
PC moves to 23-22 on the year, 9-9 in Big South Conference action and will take a week off for exams before playing a weekend series at NC State beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. Coastal Carolina improves to 27-17 and 13-5 in league play. The Chanticleers will next host Charlotte at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Jeter pitched all nine innings, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out five. PC outhit the visitors, 8-4, but left 10 runners on base to Coastal's five. The junior righthander moved to 5-4 with the loss in his sixth complete game out of 11 starts this season.
Brad Zebedis (Rock Hill, S.C.) led the Blue Hose at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort. Jay Lizanich (Greer, S.C.) also tallied two hits.
The Blue Hose loaded the bases in the first with two outs but couldn't convert. The Chanticleers took advantage by scoring the only run they would need in the top of the second. A hit-by-pitch put the leadoff runner on before a sacrifice bunt set up a Colin Hering RBI single and the visitors led, 1-0.
Jeter held Coastal hitless for the next three innings. Two singles from Lizanich and Aaron Preston (Goose Creek, S.C.) in the fifth put Liznaich in scoring position before Brandon Paul (Augusta, Ga.) reached third base in the next inning. Neither runner scored, however, keeping PC behind by one run.
Lizanich picked up his third hit in the seventh inning and Jeter continued to dominate, allowing only one hit in the seventh and eighth frames.
Zebedis reached scoring position in the eight but new pitcher Ryan Connelly stymied PC's momentum. Billy Motroni (Goose Creek, S.C.) also singled in the ninth before the visitors held off the Blue Hose, 1-0.
Connelly earned the save while starting pitcher Tyler Poole took the win, moving to 5-2.
