Matt Fraudin struck out 11 and held PC to just four hits to lead Gardner Webb to the 4-2 win over the Presbyterian College baseball team in action tonight at Keeter Stadium in Boiling Springs, N.C.
PC falls to 24-30 overall and 10-12 in the Big South, while Gardner Webb improves to 26-25-1, 10-11. Both teams square off in a doubleheader Friday, beginning at 2 p.m.
Brandon Paul led the Blue Hose effort, going one-for-four with two RBI. Also collecting hits on the night were Jay Lizanich, Aaron Preston and Billy Motroni. Bud Jeter put together a solid game in the loss (5-6), going the distance and scattering seven hits and four runs. He struck out eight.
Henry Rundio paced GWU with a three-for-four effort with one RBI. Ryan Hodge and Brad Collins also recorded a RBI apiece. Fraudin (7-5) surrendered just four hits, three of the coming in the first inning, and two runs, while striking out 11.
The Blue Hose led off the game with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second with no outs. Brad Zebedis' sacrifice bunt put them on second and third, with Paul bringing both runners home off a single through the right side to put PC up 2-0.
Gardner Webb responded with two singles to lead off the bottom of the second. Collins hit into a fielder's choice the next at-bat, resulting in one run scoring. During the play an attempt was made to get the out at first, but the throw sailed into the first base dugout with everyone taking a base, including the runner at third who came home to tie it up at 2-2.
The Runnin' Bulldogs used two lead-off singles and a PC wild pitch to put runners in second and third in the fourth inning. GWU plated the go-ahead run off a RBI sacrifice bunt by Ryan Hodge to take the 3-2 lead.
A double by Rundio in the eighth inning drove in Benji Jackson to give the Runnin' Bulldogs the 4-2 lead.
Fraudin, who held the previous six PC batters hitless, retired the PC side to help GWU preserve the two-run win.
