Baseball Heads to Georgia State for Weekend Series

All Three Games are slated for 1 p.m. First Pitch

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team hits the road for a three-game weekend series against Georgia State beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. All three games are set for 1 p.m. first pitch due to the threat of inclement weather in the Atlanta area.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team fell in midweek action to visiting Western Carolina by the score of 15-2 at the PC Baseball Complex.
 
Series History
• Georgia State leads the all-time series in the Blue Hose DI era 3-2. PC won both meeting in 2019 13-4 at GSU and 11-7 in Clinton.
 
Scouting Georgia State
• Georgia State comes into the weekend with an 8-5 mark following a 4-1 midweek road win over Wofford. The Panthers have tallied two weekend sweeps this season taking four from Purdue Fort Wayne and a three-game sweep of Villanova.
• The Panthers offense is led by Griffin Cheney who's hitting .422 with four home runs on the year. Cameron Jones checks in with a .367 average and Dalton Pearson sits at .357 beginning the weekend.
• Georgia State's top home run hitter this yhear is Max Ryerson who's tallied six homers and a team-high 12 RBIs.
• On the mound, Camren Landry is 1-2 with a 2.35 ERA in three starts as Brandon Kaminer is 1-1 wih a 2.77 ERA.
• Cameron Jones has recorded three saves so far this season for the Panthers.
 
Toth Named Big South Player of the Week
• Following a 7-for-13 week at the plate, Presbyterian College baseball senior Eric Toth (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 28-Mar.6, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• He began his week with a 2-for-4 performance in a midweek defeat against Charleston. Toth opened the weekend against Bellarmine with a season-high three hits including a double and run driven in during the Blue Hose 9-3 win over Bellarmine.
• The senior continued his strong week at the plate with his second homer of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout before adding an RBI double and scoring two runs in Presbyterian's 8-4 series finale win over the Knights.
• Over the four-game week, Toth slugged .923 and got on base at a .611 clip as he was able to raise his batting average from .290 up to .364.
 
Dearman Earns Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Honors
• Following his first collegiate save on Saturday, Presbyterian College baseball senior left-handed pitcher Clark Dearman (Milton, Ga.) has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 21-Feb. 27, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• Dearman began the week with 1.1 scoreless frames in the Blue Hose midweek contest against Georgia Tech. He recorded a pair of strikeouts in the outing against the Yellow Jackets allowing a hit and a walk.
• The Milton, Ga. native returned to the hill on Saturday afternoon and pitched the final two innings of the Blue Hose 5-1 game one victory against Manhattan to earn his first collegiate save.  He recorded three punchouts in the two innings against the Jaspers.
• Dearman leads the team with four appearances as he has allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings while totaling eight strikeouts this season.
 
Blue Hose Leaders
Jay Wetherington enters the weekend seventh in the Big South in batting average at .387 entering the weekend.
• He also ranks fifth in on base percentage at .500.
Eric Toth is tied for eighth in hits with 16 so far in 2022.
Duncan Howard enters the weekend with the fourth best ERA in the league at 1.65 as Daniel Eagen sits fifth at 1.76.
• Eagen is seventh in strikeouts with 18 and leads the league in strikeouts looking at nine.
 
Matthews Slamming the Door
• Senior Luke Matthews tossed six scoreless frames over the weekend earning his first two collegiate victories against the Ospreys in the Blue Hose season opening series win against UNF.
• Matthews tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief on Friday as he earned his first collegiate victory. Matthews totaled a career-high three strikeouts.
• He improved on Friday's performance with a career-high 3.2 scoreless innings scattering three hits in recording his second win of the year.
 
Blue Hose Long Ball
• The Blue Hose have totaled eight home runs in the opening 13 games this season off the bats of six different players.
Eric Toth and Chase Hughes led the way with two homers apiece on the season.
Jeremiah Boyd, Jack Gorman, Sean Klein and Ryan Ouzts have each tallied one this year as well.

2022 Preseason Honors
• Senior Eric Toth and sophomore Charlie McDaniel were both selected to the Preseason All-Conference team as selected by Perfect game.
• PC was tabbed fourth in the preseason conference poll as voted on by the league coaches.
 
Up Next
• The Blue Hose hit the road next on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. when PC heads to Charlotte to battle the 49ers.
