Baseball Heads to Charlotte for Midweek Battle

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team continues its four-game road swing on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. first pitch against Charlotte at Hayes Stadium.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team opened the doubleheader with a 13-10 win on Sunday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex. The host Georgia State earned the split in game two with a 10-6 victory in the finale of the series. Sophomore Jay Wetherington led the offense on Sunday with four hits.
• Senior Eric Toth went 4-for-4 in the series opener against Georgia State but the Presbyterian College baseball team came out on the wrong end of an 11-6 decision on Friday afternoon at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
Series History
• The Blue Hose and 49ers are tied 3-3 in the all-time series with Charlotte taking the last meeting 4-3 in Charlotte.
• Presbyterian is a perfect 2-0 against Charlotte in Clinton dating back to 2008.
 
Scouting Charlotte
• Charlotte comes into the midweek matchup with a 10-5 record after taking 2-of-3 from Appalachian State over the weekend.
• The 49ers have defeated Gardner-Webb & Longwood out of the Big South this season.
• Nate Furman is the offensive leader for the 49ers with a .435 average which includes five doubles, one triple and a homer. David McCabe sits at .429 with four doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs. Austin Knight enters play Tuesday with a .412 average totaling four homers and 15 runs knocked in.
• Evan Michelson leads the 49ers with a 1-0 record as he's not allowed an earned run over two innings in his three apperances. Michael Oh has allowed one earned run in his five apperances with a 1.80 ERA.
• Spencer Giesting has a team-high 25 strikeouts.
• The 49ers have 10 draft prospects in the top 35 among CUSA baseball.
 
Toth Named Big South Player of the Week
• Following a 7-for-13 week at the plate, Presbyterian College baseball senior Eric Toth (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 28-Mar.6, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• He began his week with a 2-for-4 performance in a midweek defeat against Charleston. Toth opened the weekend against Bellarmine with a season-high three hits including a double and run driven in during the Blue Hose 9-3 win over Bellarmine.
• The senior continued his strong week at the plate with his second homer of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout before adding an RBI double and scoring two runs in Presbyterian's 8-4 series finale win over the Knights.
• Over the four-game week, Toth slugged .923 and got on base at a .611 clip as he was able to raise his batting average from .290 up to .364.
 
Dearman Earns Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Honors
• Following his first collegiate save on Saturday, Presbyterian College baseball senior left-handed pitcher Clark Dearman (Milton, Ga.) has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 21-Feb. 27, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• Dearman began the week with 1.1 scoreless frames in the Blue Hose midweek contest against Georgia Tech. He recorded a pair of strikeouts in the outing against the Yellow Jackets allowing a hit and a walk.
• The Milton, Ga. native returned to the hill on Saturday afternoon and pitched the final two innings of the Blue Hose 5-1 game one victory against Manhattan to earn his first collegiate save.  He recorded three punchouts in the two innings against the Jaspers.
• Dearman leads the team with four appearances as he has allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings while totaling eight strikeouts this season.
 
Blue Hose Leaders
Jay Wetherington sits with a .409 average which is third among Big South hitters thus far this season. Wetherington is tied for third in on base percentage at .500.
Eric Toth sits second in the conference with 18 runs scored. Toth is also tied for second in the league with 22 hits on the year.
Brody Fahr is tied for the conference lead with three sacrifice flies which is 15th nationally
Duncan Howard checks into the week with the third best ERA at 1.61. He's eighth in the league in strikeouts with 21 over his four starts. Howard sits third in the league with opponents batting average at .195.
Daniel Eagen leads Big South arms with 10 strikeouts looking.
 
Last Five Games & 10 Games
Chase Hughes has a team-high seven runs driven in over the Blue Hose last five games.
Jay Wetherington is leading the Blue Hose over his last five games with a .450 average (9-for-20) with two doubles and four RBIs. He's also tallied three stolen bases in that stretch.
Alex Flood has allowed one earned run over three apperances which span five innings. Flood has tallied eight strikeouts.
• Over the last ten games, Eric Toth is hitting a team-high .444 with four extra base hits and seven RBIs.
Duncan Howard has allowed one earned run over his last 12.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.
Clark Dearman has gone four apperances with a 1.42 ERA over 6.1 innings allowing one earned run and seven strikeouts.
 
Blue Hose Long Ball
• The Blue Hose have totaled eight home runs in the opening 16 games this season off the bats of six different players.
Eric Toth and Chase Hughes led the way with two homers apiece on the season.
Jeremiah Boyd, Jack Gorman, Sean Klein and Ryan Ouzts have each tallied one this year as well.

2022 Preseason Honors
• Senior Eric Toth and sophomore Charlie McDaniel were both selected to the Preseason All-Conference team as selected by Perfect game.
• PC was tabbed fourth in the preseason conference poll as voted on by the league coaches.

• The Blue Hose return to PC Baseball Complex on Friday night at 6 p.m. to begin league play against USC Upstate on ESPN+.
