Baseball Set to Open League Play against USC Upstate on Friday

Friday's Game Moved to 1 p.m.

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team returns home on Friday for its first Big South series of the season hosting USC Upstate beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday due to expected inclement weather on Friday night. The middle game of the series is set for 3 p.m. before the finale will begin Sunday at 1. All three games will be shown on ESPN+.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team came out on the wrong end of a midweek matchup against Charlotte as the host 49ers defeated the Blue Hose 4-1 on Tuesday night at Hayes Stadium.
 
Series History
• USC Upstate leads the all-time series with the Blue Hose 16-13 as the Spartans swept the head-to-head series from PC last year 5-0.
• In last year's matchups with the Spartans, Jeremiah Boyd led the offense going 8-for-18 with four RBIs and a home run.
Eric Toth totaled four doubles and five RBIs in the stretch with Upstate.
• On the mound, Alex Flood allowed one earned run in four innings of work as he got one of the starts against USC Upstate.
Kyle Benson pitched in four of the games last year allowing three earned runs in six innings of work.
 
Scouting USC Upstate
• USC Upstate begins league play with an 11-6 record overall after dropping a midweek matchup to No. 18 Georgia on Tuesday night.
• Noah Rabon leads the way for the Spartans with a .375 average as he's totaled four doubles, one homer and 18 RBIs. Devin Buckner sits at .361 with two homers and a team-high 20 RBIs.
• Noah Sullivan is at .359 with five extra base hits and 15 runs knocked in.
• Al Holguin hasnt allowed an earned run in 3.2 innings which span two appearances with nine strikeouts as he's added a save.
• Trey Miller is 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA tossing 19.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. Sawyer Worrell is 1-0 with a 3.50 ERA in 18 innings.
• Kevin Davis has a team-high 17 strikeouts with two saves in eight appearances.
 
Toth Named Big South Player of the Week
• Following a 7-for-13 week at the plate, Presbyterian College baseball senior Eric Toth (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 28-Mar.6, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• He began his week with a 2-for-4 performance in a midweek defeat against Charleston. Toth opened the weekend against Bellarmine with a season-high three hits including a double and run driven in during the Blue Hose 9-3 win over Bellarmine.
• The senior continued his strong week at the plate with his second homer of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout before adding an RBI double and scoring two runs in Presbyterian's 8-4 series finale win over the Knights.
• Over the four-game week, Toth slugged .923 and got on base at a .611 clip as he was able to raise his batting average from .290 up to .364.
 
Blue Hose Leaders
Eric Toth sits second in the Big South with his 23 hits and ranks third in the league with 18 runs scored.
• As a team, the Blue Hose rank second in the nation with 14 sacrifice flies. Brody Fahr is tops in the Big South with three sac flies to lead the conference.
Jay Wetherington leads the league with a .417 average and ranks third in the conference with a .500 on base percentage.
Chase Hughes is eighth in the league in runs batted in with 14.
Duncan Howard is third in the conference with a 1.61 ERA allowing just four earned runs in 22.1 innings pitched. Howard has tallied 21 strikeouts in his performances this season which sits ninth in the league.
 
Last Five Games & 10 Games
• Over the last five games, Jay Wetherington is leading the Blue Hose offense with a .476 average (10-for-21) with two doubles and three RBIs. He's also a perfect 4-for-4 on the bases. He's at .429 (15-for-35) in the Blue Hose last 10 contests.
Chase Hughes leads the way with six RBIs in the last five hitting at a .333 clip. He's averaging an RBI per game in the last 10 for PC.
• Junior Colbey Klepper has allowed one earned run over his last 6.2 innings as he's totaled eight strikeouts in that stretch.
Eric Toth is leading the way in PC's last 10 games with a .457 average (16-for-35) with three extra base hits and seven RBIs.
Duncan Howard has limited opponents to one earned run over his last two starts spanning 12.2 innings with 15 strikeouts.
 
Blue Hose Long Ball
• The Blue Hose have totaled eight home runs in the opening 17 games this season off the bats of six different players.
Eric Toth and Chase Hughes led the way with two homers apiece on the season.
Jeremiah Boyd, Jack Gorman, Sean Klein and Ryan Ouzts have each tallied one this year as well.

2022 Preseason Honors
• Senior Eric Toth and sophomore Charlie McDaniel were both selected to the Preseason All-Conference team as selected by Perfect game.
• PC was tabbed fourth in the preseason conference poll as voted on by the league coaches.
