Blue Hose Close Out Homestand against WCU on Wednesday

CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College Baseball team wraps up its season-long nine game homestand on Wednesday afternoon when the Blue Hose welcome in Western Carolina to the PC Baseball Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. from Clinton on Wednesday.

About the Blue Hose
• The Presbyterian College baseball team used early offense and was able to withstand a ninth-inning rally from visiting Bellarmine to complete the three-game sweep on Sunday at the PC Baseball Complex by the score of 8-4.
• Behind 6.2 shutout innings from sophomore Duncan Howard, the Presbyterian College baseball team recorded a 5-0 shutout on Saturday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex over Bellarmine. Howard tied his career-high with 6.2 shutout frames and totaled a career-high with eight strikeouts.
• Behind a four-run second inning, the Presbyterian College baseball team opened its three-game weekend series with a 9-3 victory over Bellarmine at the PC Baseball Complex. Eric Toth led the offense with three hits on Friday night.  Ryan Ouzts also connected on his collegiate homer in the second inning to lead the offense.
 
Series History
• Wednesday's meeting marks the sixth time in DI program history that the Blue Hose have matched up with Western Carolina.
• The Catamounts hold a slim 3-2 lead in the all-time series with Wednesday being the first matchup since May 2017.
 
Scouting Western Carolina
• Western Carolina comes into the midweek matchup with a 5-7 record following dropping two of three against Stony Brook over the weekend.
• The Catamounts offense is led by Bryson Parks who checks in with a .378 average as he's knocked in 10 runs. Parks leads WCU with eight stolen bases. Seth Graves sits at .366 with five extra base hits. Drew Needham leads WCU with three homers.
• Tristan Campbell sits at 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in five apperances. Campbell has pitched 13 innings and totaled 11 strikeouts and one walk so far this season.
• Zach Franklin has not allowed an earned run in 8.1 innings as he's recorded eight strikeouts on the year.
• Franklin was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List.
 
Toth Named Big South Player of the Week
• Following a 7-for-13 week at the plate, Presbyterian College baseball senior Eric Toth (Mobile, Ala.) has been named the Big South Player of the Week for games played Feb. 28-Mar.6, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• He began his week with a 2-for-4 performance in a midweek defeat against Charleston. Toth opened the weekend against Bellarmine with a season-high three hits including a double and run driven in during the Blue Hose 9-3 win over Bellarmine.
• The senior continued his strong week at the plate with his second homer of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 shutout before adding an RBI double and scoring two runs in Presbyterian's 8-4 series finale win over the Knights.
• Over the four-game week, Toth slugged .923 and got on base at a .611 clip as he was able to raise his batting average from .290 up to .364.
 
Dearman Earns Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week Honors
• Following his first collegiate save on Saturday, Presbyterian College baseball senior left-handed pitcher Clark Dearman (Milton, Ga.) has been named the Big South Relief Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 21-Feb. 27, as announced by the league office on Monday.
• Dearman began the week with 1.1 scoreless frames in the Blue Hose midweek contest against Georgia Tech. He recorded a pair of strikeouts in the outing against the Yellow Jackets allowing a hit and a walk.
• The Milton, Ga. native returned to the hill on Saturday afternoon and pitched the final two innings of the Blue Hose 5-1 game one victory against Manhattan to earn his first collegiate save.  He recorded three punchouts in the two innings against the Jaspers.
• Dearman leads the team with four appearances as he has allowed two earned runs in 5.1 innings while totaling eight strikeouts this season.
 
Blue Hose Leaders
• Senior Eric Toth is leading the Blue Hose in the last five games with a .600 average (9-of-15) with three extra base hits and five RBIs. Toth has slugged .933 and reached base at a .667 clip in his last five games.
Brody Fahr is hitting .500 (8-for-16) as Jay Wetherington sits at .357 (5-14) with six runs scored.
Duncan Howard tossed 6.2 scoreless innings against Bellarmine. Daniel Eagen has allowed two earned runs and totaled 11 strikeouts over his last two starts.
• The Blue Hose pitching staff has allowed 16 earned runs over 43 innings as PC is 4-1 in that five game stretch.
Jack Gorman has reached base in all 12 games of the season, while Chris Veach has done it in all 11 games he's seen action in.
• Wetherington has a team-high nine game hit streak.
 
Matthews Slamming the Door
• Senior Luke Matthews tossed six scoreless frames over the weekend earning his first two collegiate victories against the Ospreys in the Blue Hose season opening series win against UNF.
• Matthews tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief on Friday as he earned his first collegiate victory. Matthews totaled a career-high three strikeouts.
• He improved on Friday's performance with a career-high 3.2 scoreless innings scattering three hits in recording his second win of the year.
 
Blue Hose Long Ball
• The Blue Hose have totaled eight home runs in the opening 12 games this season off the bats of six different players.
Eric Toth and Chase Hughes led the way with two homers apiece on the season.
Jeremiah Boyd, Jack Gorman, Sean Klein and Ryan Ouzts have each tallied one this year as well.

2022 Preseason Honors
• Senior Eric Toth and sophomore Charlie McDaniel were both selected to the Preseason All-Conference team as selected by Perfect game.
• PC was tabbed fourth in the preseason conference poll as voted on by the league coaches.

Up Next
• PC hits the road on Friday to open up a three-game series in Atlanta against Georgia State. The series opener with the Panthers is set for Friday at 5 p.m.
